IJlst

IJlst is not only one of the Eleven Cities, but also a “Wood City.” For years, tree trunks were sawn in IJlst; the iconic sawmill “de Rat” (The Rat) commemorates that time. The city is also known for its characteristic courtyards.

Sneek

Due to its central location in the Frisian lake district, Sneek is a true waterside city, with the famous city symbol being the Watergate. In addition to water sports and the Sneekweek, you will also find culture, conviviality, and great restaurants in Sneek.

Lemmer

Take a stroll around the streets surrounding the waterfront in the center of Lemmer, also known as ‘slag om het Dok.’ From the Lemmer beach, you can easily take a dip in the IJsselmeer. A ‘must-see’ in Lemmer is the UNESCO World Heritage Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal, the largest functioning steam pumping station in the world!

Sloten

The smallest of our eleven cities, Sleat. A cozy village by the water. The city center boasts beautiful old residential houses and fortifications. The town has a rich maritime history, which is on display at the local museum.

Woudsend

Between the Slotermeer and Heegermeer lies the village of Woudsend. The unique historic center with its many narrow alleyways is definitely worth a visit. You can also find many good restaurants there.
